New Music with Steph Liong
After a short break, Steph is back with the best new music you should be checking out.
First up is an old-school number; Bina Charanga from Ry-Co Jazz, and despite having gone their separate ways years ago, after a gargantuan discography, have put out a new compilation album, Dansons avec le Ry-co Jazz. The compilation highlights the busiest period of their career in the mid-60s. Often heralded as the pioneers of Tumbélé, the signature sound of the French Carribean, this album gives you a window in to the band’s early years of development and experimentation.
Next is Challenger, a track off the 9th album from Josephine Foster, Faithful Fairy Harmony. The album goes from tender finger-picking to psychedelic freak-outs across a vast array of instruments, all underlying an impressive display of Foster’s vocal work.
Last is Ryley Walker out of Chicago, with the song Raven off The Lillywhite Sessions. After a few features on New Music, Ryley is back with his interpretation of once-scrapped Dave Matthews’ Band album, The Lillywhite Sessions. Years after the originals leaked on the internet at the turn of the millennia, Ryley has come out with his own interpretation of the album, confidently putting his own touch on Matthews’ work.
