New Music with Steph Liong

Steph is back again with everything you need to know about this week’s new music.

All the way from West Africa we have the reissue of the 1983 album, Buli Povo! by António Sanches. Funaná, the most African of music styles from Cabo Verde, was once banned and anyone who listened, played or recorded it could be arrested, imprisoned and tortured. António Sanches took the spirit of funaná music to the modern world with electric guitars and drums and spaced-out synth. It is an eclectic reissue that is fun and celebratory as can be heard on ‘Desgraca̧da’.

Vive la Void is the solo monika of Sanae Yamada from Moon Duo, and she has just released her debut, self-titled album. On it, she clearly shows the otherworldly sheen she gives to her music. She has a hypnotic tone with her haunting yet soothing vocals, as can be heard on ‘Death Money’.

Eleanor Friedberger is back with a new album, Rebound, which is out now. This album is a real departure from her previous music, which had a more acoustic and folk-leaning feel. She has traded in live instrumentation for programed drums, muted guitars and a duno synthesiser and. Rebound is a new sonic direction with up-beat snappy hooks, nostalgic dream pop ballads and an homage to 80s dark goth pop. For a taste of her new catchy and refreshing style check out ‘Everything’.
