New Music with Steph Liong

Well it’s Monday, which means back to work and back to New Music with 2SER’s favourite in-house muso, Steph Liong.

We’re kicking things off with Brisbane-based jazz vocalist, Tiana Khasi, and her debut EP MEGHALAYA. A ‘love letter to identity and self’, Khasi un-packs her thoughts on heritage, and her connection to north-east Indian country Meghalaya, the home of her grandmother’s Khasi tribe. We can expect a vibey mix of jazz, soul and hip-hop in this debut, as Khasi reflects on her past and present, and celebrates spirit and healing.

Up next, is Nashville group, Lambchop. A 2SER favourite, the group has come-out with their self-decided 14th album, This (Is What I Wanted to Tell You).  In their 30-year strong career, the group have served-up a diverse range of distinct sounds, with 2019 coming as no exception. Songs like The New Isn’t So You Anymore harbour incredibly lush, electronic-soul tones that will delight new listeners, and familiar ones.

Taking us out, Mdou Moctar’s Ilana: The Creator. The first-ever studio album from the Tuareg artist, Moctar delivers a truly transportational experience in this album, expertly interweaving traditional Tuareg guitar, spacey autotune and verbose rock-poetry.

Have a listen to Tess and Steph, and enjoy this week’s New Music stand-outs.
