New screening tool to assist in elderly mental health care

Ageing is a part of life, and to some extent, we expect certain things, such as more time on our hands, maybe assigned nanny duties or lawn ball every second Sunday. But what we also expect is loneliness as our loved ones may pass on before us.

In an article from Macquarie University it was revealed that one in five older Australians are now experiencing loneliness, leaving many at risk of mental health issues. In fact, according to national surveys, older Australians are receiving the lowest rates of help for mental health.

On a brighter note, with help from fundings, a research team from the University is developing a new tool that will help provide mental health screenings for older adults.

Professor Viviana Wuthrich, leader of the project joined Tina Quinn on The Daily to discuss.
