‘Not Niwe, Not Nieuw, Not Neu’ Art Show
4a Centre for Contemporary Asian Art is playing host to new installation which provides an examination to how artists have interacted and disturbed the concept of nationhood. Not Niwe, Not Nieuw, Not Neu focuses on the colonial historical narratives and scientific categorisations of the Asia-Pacific and how the artists attempt to offer a counterpoint to these. The investigation of the impact of colonialism on language and conceptions of nature is inherent to this exhibition. Through this the artists strive to provide new frameworks and connections for the audiences to perceive. A mixed media exhibition that aims to examine historical ties between Australia and the Asia-Pacific, Not Niwe, Not Nieuw, Not Neu provides a collaboration of both archival and recent works from Sir Joseph Banks, Daniel Boyd, Newell Harry, Fiona Pardington, Michael Parekowhai and James Tylor.
Michael Do, curator of the exhibition, chatted with us this morning.
