Nurses Union Uncovers Aged Care Mistreatment
A civilian army of some 260,000 nurses found shocking levels of mistreatment at seventy aged-care facilities across Queensland in a state-wide audit over the weekend. They found residents regularly experienced malnutrition and dehydration, laying with untreated injuries for days and some had even been administered dangerous medications by unqualified staff. One patient disclosed he had been left in bed for up to 12 hours without being turned. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation have demanded new laws and regulations since 2009, but inaction has forced them to take the issue into their own hands. Federal Secretary of the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation, Annie Butler, joined The Daily discuss.
