On the Basis of Sex: RGB Legacy Stifled in New Biopic

The Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic titled On the Basis of Sex arrived in cinemas earlier this month – yet the cinematic portrayal of the Supreme Court Justice’s life has received mixed reviews. The film takes place in a formative time of the women’s liberation movement in the US, as Ginsburg, the struggling attorney and new mother takes on a groundbreaking case which changes the way courts view gender discrimination. To talk more on what Time magazine called the “well-intentioned yet flawed” film, we were joined by Alicia Byrnes from the School of Screen and Cultural Studies at Melbourne University.
