Calls for Australia to Stop Arms Exports
With its roots in a 2011 political transition that failed to bring stability to one of the Arab world’s poorest countries, the war in Yemen is still waging. As food prices remain on the rise and household incomes continue to plummet, Oxfam Australia has called on the Australian government to commit further humanitarian assistance to families suffering.
This comes after reports that the federal government has provided $36 million to support a Canberra manufacturer’s development of a weapons system that has been sold to Saudi Arabia, which is accused of committing war crimes against civilians in Yemen.
We spoke with Conor Costello, Oxfam Australia’s Advocacy and Campaigns Manager, to discuss the crisis.
