How permaculture shaped the face of Zimbabwe
Deforestation of woodlands has seen massive erosion across the surface of Zimbabwe resulting in infertile soils and dying crops.
Malnutrition and hunger soon followed in certain areas as the eroded land was unable to produce enough food for growing populations.
The Chikukwa Project, a project headed by a German couple, brought the practice of permaculture or ‘self-sufficient agriculture’ to the people of Chikukwa to address these problems of malnutrition and install sustainable systems of agriculture.
Filmmaker Gillian Leahy ventured to Zimbabwe a few years ago to film the progress of The Chikukwa Project and caught up with Jake Morcom to talk how it’s changed the face of Zimbabwe’s agriculture.

- Gillian Leahy – Filmmaker and Deputy Head of School of Communication and Associate Professor in Media, Arts and Production at the University of Technology Sydney.
