The Pledge for More Female Firefighters

When we think of the brave firefighters who risk their lives in the event of bushfires, house fires and other disasters, you could be forgiven for thinking it is a male-dominated career. The truth is, the 2015 recruitment campaign raised the number of female firefighters to 20% – however this only makes up 4.5% of full time firefighters.
With a recently announced ‘Pledge for Parity’, Fire & Rescue NSW aims to prove that firefighting is a highly specialised and technical career fit for both men and women, and not just a ‘man’s job.’ For their upcoming 2016 recruitment campaign they aim to have a 50:50 ratio of male and female recruits.
Today we spoke to Commissioner Greg Mullins of Fire & Rescue NSW about his bold new plan and what it entails.
