Policing Protests During Pandemic Crisis

NSW Police have set up a strike force to find anti-lockdown protesters after thousands shut down Sydney CBD in recent Sydney protests.  These protests in Sydney’s city have highlighted the contention between balancing competing public interests in free speech and public assembly with risks to community safety posed by possible coronavirus transmission at public assemblies. Protestors focused on reopening the economy and contesting government restrictions have ignored public health guidelines, maintaining pre-COVID tactics, such as standing together closely and not wearing facemasks resulting in NSW being slapped with a 4 week extended lockdown. To discuss the policing of protest during the pandemic, we were joined by Associate Professor of Criminology, Law and Society at University of Sydney, Greg Martin.
