Emma Ruth Rundle makes the type of brooding and slow burning folk that’s a little twisted and noirish, but also gorgeous and sprawling. Her third album, ‘On Dark Horses’ is atmosphere packed and showcases Rundle’s meticulously controlled vocal pace. A newfound country lilt across a few tracks too, in the style of other 2SER faves like Emmylou Harris x Gillian Welch and steeped in exquisite storytelling.
There’s also a surprise release from experimental producer and enigma Yves Tumour. His real name may or may not be Sean Bowie, but what’s undisputed is his effortless ability to cut across so many different styles and end up with such a cohesive finished product in new album ‘Safe in the Hands of Love’. Best known for his more ambient and noise composition, this album goes beyond that and moves wildly into indie rock, jazz, soul and off-kilter pop.
Lastly, there’s Fred Thomas who made a bit of a name for himself in the late 90s / early 00s as frontman of indie rock band Saturday Looks Good to Me. He’s mostly stayed in the rock lane for almost 20 years now but just does it so damn well and continues to on his latest, ‘Aftering’. There’s a kind of stream of consciousness that runs deep, and a wryness that’s equal parts devastating and funny, but all parts loveable.
Plus new singles from Bill Ryder-Jones, Donna Amini, Charles Bradley, Sloan Peterson, Deep Sea Arcade and Stephen Steinbrink.
Until next week,
Steph
