Yesterday treasurer Jim Chalmers announced his fourth budget, which is very much focused on ensuring the Albanese government doesn’t suffer the negative reaction at the polls other incumbent governments around the world have experienced during a period of high inflation.

Stephen Hill asked chief economist Professor Tim Harcourt of the Institute for Public Policy and Governance (IPPG) whether the budget will provide some political momentum for the government on the eve of an election.
