Prescription drugs killing Australians

A new report from the Penington Institute shows that accidental fatal overdoses in Australia are mainly driven by opioids.

In 2021, out of a total of 1,675 deaths, where around almost half were linked to opioids. The report also highlights the increasing danger posed by synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

This issue has been ongoing for the past 20 years, resulting in 37,000 drug-induced deaths in Australia.

The urgent need for comprehensive government action, particularly in rural areas and among socially disadvantaged groups.
