The Privatisation of Prisons in New South Wales
Over the past decade, the New South Wales government has been handing over the management of select prisons to private operators to cut costs and bump up efficiency. But questions regarding accountability and prisoner welfare have mired these private prisons in controversy ever since their beginnings.
Now, a parliamentary inquiry into the management of the Parklea Correctional Centre will investigate whether such private prisons are an improvement over public prisons; or if they prioritise profit over performance.
The Daily‘s Sam Baran was joined in the studio by David Shoebridge, Greens member and Deputy Chair of the inquiry in Parklea Correctional Centre, to discuss the privatisation of prisons in New South Wales.
