Gender Acceptance in Our Schools

A private girls’ school in Sydney changed their uniform to allow students to wear shorts and long pants earlier this year, prompting some backlash.

Gender diverse students are part of a minority in Australian schools, and experience higher rates of violence, and subsequent emotional, social and physical health inequalities. One study found that 94% of participants heard homophobic language at school, and more than half of this occurred daily. Tess had Victoria Rawlings, Academic Fellow at the University of Sydney’s School of Education and Social Work, in the studio to find out how we can make our schools more gender inclusive.
