Yesterday, Queensland passed new laws criminalising coercive control, being the second state in the country to adopt the shift. The historic raft of reforms will also strengthen consent laws and improve the experience of victim survivors in court.
The Criminal Law (Coercive Control and Affirmative Consent) passed after being introduced in October last year and will kick off in 2025. 
The new law will carry a jail sentence of up to 14 years. 
An expert says while they’re optimistic about the new law, there are concerns involving those disadvantaged in the community.
