Racism: Another battle for the unemployed
For the unemployed, trying to land a job can work out to be a job in itself. But for non-Anglo Australians, discrimination and racial bias hinders them from a fair go in the workforce.
Recent studies have found that people with Anglo-Saxon names are 8.2% more likely to be invited back for an interview than non-Anglo individuals. This all points to an issue Australia has been trying to skirt under the rug for quite some time…recruitment bias.
While racism is a common point of recruitment bias, it can favour other factors, like gender, age or class.
Tess spoke with organisational psychologist, Dina Ward to find out the full effects of this discrimination and what’s causing it.
