Radicalization of young people is on the rise due to extreme violence online

A suite of recent troubling events have shone a spotlight on extremist violence, especially the kind involving online radicalization of young people. A few weeks ago, Austrian authorities cancelled three Taylor Swift Eras Tour Concerts due to a suspected attack on the attendees planned by a 19 year old. Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) Chief Mike Burgess warned everyone about young people radicalizing online, while lifting the terror threat from possible to probable.  Big tech companies are designed for profit where extreme content is created to increase engagement at a very fast speed. They tend to target vulnerable individuals and one such case is young men being targeted with misogynist content online that provides solutions to their insecurities, further leading to a hostile environment for women.

To discuss more in detail about this topic, Dr Vivian Gerrand, a Research Fellow at Alfred Deakin Institute joined.
