Raising the Foster Care Age to 21

Turning 18 should be an exciting time for all teenagers but if you’re in foster care it can be a bit of a scary milestone. The current system classifies young people as adults as soon as they turn 18, forcing them out of care. Foster care campaigners are pushing to extend out-of-home care to age 21, claiming that these youth being left unsupported and often end up homeless, jobless or in the justice system. They say that by supporting youth until the age of 21, they are “more likely to be set up for success”.

The CEO of Foster Care Association Victoria, Katie Hooper, spoke to The Daily about the issue.
