An Analysis of the Natural Therapies Rebate Debate

As of today, the Federal Government’s rebate on private health insurance for 16 natural therapies is no longer.

This decision was based on the recommendations of an Advisory Committee to the 2017 Natural Therapies Review, which examined the clinical efficacy, cost effectiveness, safety and quality of the following remedies: Alexander Technique, Aromatherapy, Ayurveda, Bowen Therapy, Buteyko, Feldenkrais, Herbalism/Western Herbalism, Homeopathy, Iridology, Kinesiology, Massage therapy, Naturopathy, Pilates, Reflexology, Rolfing, Tai Chi and Yoga.

We spoke with Dr Ken Harvey (Associate Professor of Public Health and Preventative Medicine at Monash University, President of Friends of Science in Medicine and Director of Medreach) to shed some light on the issue.
