Ruby Gill on their Avril Lavigne Cover Band, Identity and ‘Some Kind Of Control.’
It’s not often we as listeners are gifted with artists quite like Ruby Gill.
Ruby Gill is a Joburg-born, Naarm/Melbourne based pianist, guitarist and singer-songwriter known for their honest and heartfelt lyrics, accompanied by their magical instrumentation and distinct voice.
Ruby burst onto the scene after the release of their first single back in 2018, called ‘Your Mum’, garnering millions of streams and a committed fanbase ahead of the release of her debut album ‘I’m gonna die with this frown on my face’ (2022).
‘I’m gonna die with this frown on my face’ was an internationally acclaimed record, which debuted at #5 on the AIR Independent Album Charts, and nominated for an Australian Music Prize.
Their latest single, ‘Some Kind of Control’ is no different from the mastery we’ve seen in the past from Ruby. Yet it is more honest, candid and intimate than ever before. These emotions are at the forefront, pulling in listeners and placing them right into the centre of the song. Written during the covid lockdown, the song details Gill’s conflicting emotions during the pandemic, while wrestling with the complete lack of control as a result.
Ruby Gill sat down with Dream State host Jas to chat all about living in South Africa, finding a voice in Naarm and ‘Some Kind of Control’.
