Sampa the Great leads the way to an Afrofuture

The return of Vivid to Sydney has seen the return of an artist whose AnAfroFuture show was to be a cornerstone of last year’s event. Instead, she exploded onto the Sydney Opera House stage in 2022 with a performance that brings her African home of Zambia to the main stage of Australia and delighted her fans, starved of watching her blossoming talent.

Sampa the Great is just getting started, even though she has already claimed the Australian Music Prize, TWICE as well as a pile of other accolades. Her sheer dynamic performance, her mash of hip-hop, R&B and homeland influences have sent waves around the world with performances at Coachella and Glastonbury festivals on her 2022 calendar.

On the eve of her long-awaited live return to her second home of Australia, Sampa the Great took some time to chat to Jules and Mick about the silver linings of remaining in Africa during the pandemic and what that means for her own future.
