School Uniforms: Are they still relevant?
School uniforms are a long-standing element of the Australian school system but there is often heavy debate about why this homogeneity is still enforced. While some studies claim the wearing of uniforms can improve academic results, there are many other factors that have to be considered.
The attire of students is regulated by what is deemed ‘reasonable’ in the eyes of Australian legislation but this is largely subjective. Within this, there is often a lack of gender-neutral options – high schools in particular often do not give girls the choice to wear shorts and pants.
To discuss this, Nic spoke to Dr. Amanda Mergler, senior lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology and co-founder of the national group Girls Uniform Agenda.
