Security or Economy?

Australia is on the brink of a transformative era to reshape its position on the global political stage. Since 2017, the nation has assumed the role of David to China’s Goliath – from resisting Chinese pressure to adopt Huawei technology, to demanding an inquiry into Covid-19’s origins.

Two years ago, Australia also entered a surprise regional security pact with the US and the UK, known as the AUKUS alliance, further antagonising Australia’s relationship with China.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent visit to China with President Xi Jinping suggests a potential progression towards reconciliation, but with limits.

As Australia navigates this delicate relationship, it faces the challenge of balancing national security and economic interests.

Former NSW Premier and Foreign Minister Bob Carr gave his thoughts on Australia’s diplomatic role in building a comprehensive détente between the US and China.
