Shark nets in northern NSW are still trapping “bycatch”
In 2015, a spike in shark incidents around the northern coastal towns of Ballina and Evans Head triggered a fierce debate about the role of Government in protecting swimmers from sharks. In response, the State Government opted to install five new nets at beaches in the area in 2016. Two years later, data from the second season of the trial has been released, and conservationists are pretty appalled with the results.
