Should the COVID-19 Vaccine be Mandatory?

The much anticipated COVID-19 vaccine is in its late stages of development and the Australian government is discussing how to best distribute it. While Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, initially said that the vaccine would be “mandatory,” he later rescinded his comment and claimed it would be “encouraged.”

Uncertainty surrounding the vaccine’s distribution begs the question; could the COVID vaccine be mandatory in Australia? And is a mandate necessary for effective treatment?

To answer these difficult questions, we were joined by Associate Professor, Anita Heywood, from UNSW’s School of Public Health and Community Medicine.
