Since 1878 The Domain has acted as the home of so-called free speech in Sydney, acting as a barometer for public public opinion, Speakers’ Corner was an important political forum of the day.
The Sydney tradition sees so called ‘SoapBox Speakers’ perch themselves on top of ladders and pit their ideas against those of the crowd, criticism and heckling are commonplace – and often encouraged.
But how has this venerable gathering endured the advent of television and the digital age?
Steve Maxwell has been a speaker at the Domain for over 30 years, he also wrote ‘The History of Soapbox Oratory,’ which details the engaging history of SoapBox speaking in Sydney.
