The Sweet Taste of Discrimination: with Madeline Price
What does the price of a cupcake have to do with gender discrimination? The University of Queensland Union is today hosting a Gender Pay Gap Bake Sale, where the baked goods will cost $1 if you’re a man but less for women. This bake sale seems like nothing more than a simple and delectable way to point out the fact that women still earn less than men for equivalent work; however, after a vitriolic Facebook post went viral, the bake sale has been accused of discrimination. The organisers of the bake sale, including Madeline Price, have been threatened online with violence and rape. We talked to Madeline Price – Women’s Officer at the University of Queensland Union and organiser of Feminist Week and the bake sale itself – about the backlash, the gender pay gap,the need for feminism and the deliciousness of cupcakes (and brownies and cookies, we’re told).
