Sydney’s Water Supply Threatened by Potential Expansion of Coal Mining Projects in Area

Coal mining operations around Sydney’s drinking water supply have existed for over a century. In the last few decades, advances in mining technology has resulted in coal mining expanding activity directly underneath our cache of fresh water.

 

Mineral companies are seeking to further expand the operations of these mines – pending the findings of an independent panel into the environmental consequences.

 

Georgina Woods, coordinator at the Lock the Gate Alliance joined us to discuss the current impact of coal mining on water quality, and what the expansion of mining operations in the area might mean for both person and planet.
