Thai Referendum

Thailand has been under military rule since 2014 and just yesterday, its people have voted in a referendum that many in Australia may not know about.

Some say the military-backed interim government wants to extend its grip on power and is hoping to achieve this by putting its own constitution in place. This would, in effect set the conditions for the next elections, which are expected within the next year.

Preliminary results have already been announced, with around 60% of voters in support of the new constitution.

Sam spoke to Dr Gavan Butler, Honorary Associate and Thailand Coordinator at the University of Sydney’s Southeast Asia Centre, about the impacts of the Thai referendum.
