The Bible in Australia
The 2016 Census revealed what many of us already suspected: Australia is becoming more and more an atheist, secular nation. For many Sydnersiders, it has been a while since we’ve gone to church or actually sat with a Bible and read it. In fact, it is becoming more and more common for Australians to have never stepped inside a church at all.
But whether we have faith or not, an understanding of the Bible is incredibly important in understanding Australian history and identity.
To discuss the importance of Bible literacy and how it fits in Australian society, The Daily’s Sam Baran was joined by Dr Meredith Lake, historian and author of the recently published book The Bible in Australia: A Cultural History.
Dr Lake’s book is out now from New South Books.
