The Critically Endangered Regent Honeyeater vs. New Coal. Who Will Win?
We’ve heard a lot about the tale of the Black-throated Finch versus the Indian Miner, with the management of the endangered bird being one of the final hoops that Adani Mining must jump through before starting work on their controversial Carmichael coal mine.
Now, there’s a new bird on the block – the Regent Honeyeater – which stands firmly in the way of a coal-fired power plant that has been proposed for the Hunter Economic Zone, a 3,290-hectare site in the Hunter Valley.
We spoke with Birdlife Australia’s NSW Project Manager Mick Roderick about the history of the Hunter Economic Zone as well as the ecological and traditional importance of this area.
