The Death of The Plebiscite
With the Labor Party promising to block the infamous same-sex marriage plebiscite, it’s little surprise that a vote yesterday resulted in a 29-33 loss. Believing that it would set back progress in the fight for same-sex marriage by a number of years, Labor, the Greens, the Nick Xenephon Team and Derryn Hinch voted against the Turnbull Government’s proposition. Conversely, Attorney General George Brandis claimed that blocking the plebiscite would also prevent progress.
The plebiscite already destabilized Turnbull’s leadership: with Labor and the Greens pushing for more action on marriage equality, how might this issue affect our political landscape? Earlier, we were joined by Senator Janet Rice of the Greens.
