The Four (& More) Waves of Feminism

Feminist history has typically been packaged into “waves” to understand the trajectory towards the attainment of equal rights for women.

From what is widely considered the the first wave of feminism in 1848, campaigning for the right for women to vote, to the current fourth wave starting in 2013, the age of #metoo movement and online activism. But what happened in between each wave? Does a single wave capture all the progress towards equal rights? Did feminism exist before 1848? Much like feminism, the waves metaphor is complex and has been subject to much debate and opining.

Professor Sharon Crozier-De Rosa, Professor of history at the University of Wollongong, joined 2SER Breakfast to discuss the nuances of each individual wave, what occurred in between each, and where we will be going to next. Are we still riding the fourth wave? Will there be a fifth?
