Zamaan Ya Sukkar is a brilliant new compilation from Belgium label and DJ collective Radio Martiko who shine a spotlight on songs from the late 50s and 60s in Cairo, Egypt; a place that was seen as the heart of the Middle East at that time. Opulent and grand-feeling throughout, this collection cut across mambo, jazz, pop, bolero and Bollywood orchestral sounds.
Closer to home is Melbourne’s Mojo Juju and her deeply personal third album ‘Native Tongue’. Mojo reflects on her mother’s Indigenous heritage, her Father’s experience as a Filipino immigrant and her experience growing up in regional Australia as a queer, person of colour through moody, textured beats that mix together soul, r’n’b, blues & hip hop. A huge national tour is coming up in October/November with $1 from each ticket going to PLUS1, a charity that supports Aboriginal Legal Service.
And lastly, UK outfit Tunng return with their sixth studio album, ‘Songs You Make at Night’. Reforming their original line up, the band have also gone back to their blueprint sound of electronic oriented folk with a dreamy plushness and dynamic textures. Not a new or revelatory style by any means, but one that they’ve nailed here. Frontman Mike Lindsay also put out a collaboration album with Laura Marling earlier this year under the name LUMP.
New singles as well from Dinosaur Jr. frontman J Mascis, Lydia Persaud, Monnone Alone, Yumi Zouma, Colin Caulfield and The Duke Spirit’s Liela Moss.
Until next week,
