The recent Tamil family deportation case has highlighted to the country a range of problems that are coming to light regarding the “fast-track” refugee assessment system. Intended to create a faster procedure for processing asylum claims, the system has been marked by prolonged delays and restrictions on the types of visas available to refugees, which is unfortunately contributing to the mental deterioration and despair of asylum applicants.
