The Payphone – relic or life line?
It’s hard to imagine a world without mobile phones, we take for granted the ability to connect with anyone, anytime, anywhere. But it’s easy to forget that this isn’t a luxury enjoyed by everyone.
This past year eleven million calls were made from Telstra’s public payphones, 23 000 of those calls were made to critical services like LifeLine and triple zero.
Telstra has announced that they will be making all standard calls from their 15 000 payphones around Australia completely free – a game-changer for many including the homeless, victims of natural disasters and anyone who has ever found themselves in a sticky situation.
But for women fleeing domestic and family violence access to untraceable communication can be life-saving.
CEO of The Women’s Services Network, Karen Bentley, joined us to discuss how a mobile phone can be a perpetrator’s best weapon.
Please call NSW Domestic Violence Help Line 1800 656463 or 1800 RESPECT if you or someone you know is affected by this.
