Genetic tests which reveal whether a person is carrying a gene known to trigger a specific disease are becoming more common in Australian medical practice. However, the knowledge that these tests provide is not always easy to comprehend and can affect major decisions in people’s lives. The confronting nature of these results has created a need for genetic counsellors, professionals who help people to understand the results of their genetic tests.
