This Day in History, April 23rd
Living in the past, today’s date Maya king Uneh Chan of Calakmul attacked rival city-state Palenque ruled by one of the few female leaders in Maya history, Queen Yohl Ik’nal. Explorer Alfred Gibson disappeared during Ernest Giles’ second expedition to the deserts of Western Australia in what would become known, funnily enough, as the Gibson Desert, and the launch of Soyuz 1 made Colonel Vladimir Komarov the first cosmonaut to fly to space twice, although unfortunately its return flight would also make him the first person to die as a result of space flight. Plus birthdays for William Shakespeare, Shirley Temple, Glenn Cornick of Jethro Tull, and Roy Orbison.
Jethro Tull – Aqualung
Roy Orbinson – You Got It
