How TikTok changes the way we engage with music

The concept of Internet memes function as the core of what Lawrence Lessig coins as “remix culture“, which builds on reimagining existing creative works by dissolving the text’s autonomy to generate new media. What that looks like today can be traced to everyone’s favourite battery and time vacuum, TikTok. Professor Kai Riemer, who teaches Information Technology and Organisation at the University of Sydney, spoke with Jono on Drive about how TikTok has revolutionised the way we consume music as a vehicle for social storytelling, how virality on the platform affects promotional rollout of new music, and whether its users are smart enough to see through the industry’s “engineered virality”.
