Time to Change Problematic Representation of Arab Culture

Though there are 22 separate Arab nationalities, the portrayal of Arabs in Australia tends to range from stereotypical and homogenizing to racist pop-culture caricatures. Edited by award-winning author and academic Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah, and activist and poet Sara Saleh, and featuring contributors such as Ruby Hamad and Paula Abood (among many others); ‘Arab, Australian, Other: Stories on Race and Identity’ features a collection of experiences written by members of the Arab-Australian community. It includes stories of family, ethnicity, history, grief, isolation, belonging and identity. We had award winning author of 11 novels, lawyer, human rights advocate and academic, Dr Randa-Abdel Fattah herself, to speak to us on her outstanding book.
