This week Andrew discusses Peter Polites’s debut novel Down the Hume. Close to home for Sydney-siders, Down the Hume explore the landscape of Sydney and different sides of the East and West. In reference to the Hume Highway, this piece offers more than the typical look at Sydney. Through the main character, Polites examines themes of economic divide, drug addiction, sexual identity and lack of connection to the land and as the piece moves, Polites demonstrates the physical and symbolic divide between the differing suburbs in Sydney, and the experience held by the leading characters.
