Turnbull’s new idea: Drop federal public school funding
Last week, the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced a plan to change how public schools are funded. The proposal would see the Federal government hand over the running of public schools, and only public schools to state and territory governments, who would then be allowed to levy their own income tax to pay for it all.
Over the weekend, state and territory governments knocked back the idea but Malcolm Turnbull has said he’ll push back a decision on education funding to next year.
But the proposal has already ignited important discussion on education, efficiency and taxes. Would shifting more responsibility to state governments increase transparency? And are we doing enough to ensure that schools nation-wide are receiving their fair share of funding?
