Understanding Eastern and Western Cultural Differences

Australia is an extremely multicultural society with people who come from a vast array of different cultural backgrounds. However, psychologists, sociologists and anthropologists have uncovered that our cultural backgrounds play a significant role in our reasoning, behaviour and sense of self. Basically, our cultural backgrounds affect our day to day lives in many ways. What we know is that Eastern and Western cultures have profoundly different values. From collectivist attitudes in Eastern societies and individualistic attitudes in Western societies – being aware of these differences may allow us to develop a better understanding and awareness of each other. To help us understand cultural differences between Eastern and Western societies we had Professor Jaya Dantas from Curtin University.
