Understanding Metadata: what are the risks?

The federal government’s mandatory data retention legislation was passed in 2015 and came into effect in April this year. It requires telecommunication companies to keep and retain customer’s metadata for at least 2 years. Last night, Digital Rights Watch held an event as part of the Melbourne Writer’s Festival on Understanding Metadata. Former head of the Human Rights Commission, professor Gillian Triggs, agreed to hand over a day’s worth of her metadata to Digital Rights Watch to see what they could find out about her.

Amy Gray, Board member of Digital Rights Watch and host of Understanding Metadata joined us on the show to talk about the implications of data retention.
