University Degrees Should Require Students to know their Maths

Studying mathematics is no longer compulsory for all HSC students, and some students don’t choose the subject in order to maximise their ATAR score. The entry to all degrees no longer have a required prerequisite study in mathematics have been replaced with only an assumed knowledge. Many first year teachers in mathematics at universities have stated that this has negatively impacted the way they teach.

However, earlier this year, the University of Sydney has stated that students entering degrees of science, engineering, commerce and IT to have completed at least an intermediate level of maths in high school.

Earlier, we were joined by by Deborah King, Associate Professor in Mathematics at the University of Melbourne to talk more about this issue and how a prerequisite of maths can change the way students learn at uni.
