Victoria Lifts Ban for Onshore Gas Exploration

The Victorian government has announced it will lift a ban on onshore gas exploration from July 2021 in an aim to decrease power prices and create jobs.

Offshore gas exploration is set to commence off the south west coast of Victoria by the end of this year and this new legislation will allow onshore gas extraction to start next year.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said the new gas supplies will be reserved for Victorian households, yet critics say the effects on the environment and climate will not be reserved for Victoria alone.

Breakfast host Alex spoke to Tim Baxter a senior researcher from the climate council about the effects this change could have and the best way forward.
