Voluntary Assisted Dying Legalised in ACT

All six Australian states have previously passed Voluntary Assisted Dying laws, and the Australian Capital Territory parliament has recently followed suit, with a new law passing 20 votes to 5 on June 5th. The law will take effect from November 2025, and it comes after a 25-year long federal ban that prevented the territories from legislating on this issue was lifted in December 2022. Madeleine Archer, a Senior Research Assistant, PhD candidate, and sessional academic at the Australian Centre for Health Law Research in the Queensland University of Technology, joined us on The Daily to discuss the change and its implications.
