Wadjemup Wirin Bidi, commemorating Rottnest Island’s dark history

This week,  Aboriginal Elders and community groups from all over Western Australia will gather to commemorate Australia’s largest single Death-in-Custody site, Wadjemup or Rottnest Island.

The event is called Wirin Bidi which means ‘spirit trail,’ a significant cultural ceremony to remember more than 4,000 Aboriginal men and boys who were incarcerated on Wadjemup between 1838 and 1931.

The event will include truth-telling from Traditional Owners and Elders, to foster healing by acknowledging the island’s dark history.
